Description:

The German Shepherd Dog is also known as the Alsatian. It is a well proportioned, muscular, strong dog. Its colourings are mostly black and tan, sable or all black, however they also sometimes come in blue, liver and white. White German Shepherd Dogs are now being bred and recognised as a separate breed called the 'America White Shepherd.'  There are three varieties of the German Shepherd: rough-coated, long rough-coated, and long-haired.

 

Size:

Height: Dogs 60-65cm (24-26 inches)

Bitches 55-60cm (22-24 inches)

Weight: 35-40kg (77-85 pounds)

Herding

 

Coat and Grooming:

German Shepherd Dogs are constant shedders. However, the coat requires little attention other than a recommended daily brushing.

 

Ease of Training:

German Shepherd Dogs  are intelligent , obedient dogs, eager to learn and will react well to being trained from an early age. They respond well to firm, yet calm training. Happy when set tasks, this intelligent breed and learns quickly and is often used as police dogs, guide dogs, avalanche rescue dogs, tracking dogs and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other areas including, obedience, agility, and flyball. The majority of this breed will have incredible loyalty towards their handler and will need regular contact.

 

Temperament:

Loyal to handler and family, intelligent, obedient, alert, sociable and friendly. German Shepherd Dogs will get on well with other animals and children if they have been correctly socialised.

 

Health Issues:

Can suffer from hereditary diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. If looking for a German Shepherd Puppy, check that both parents have had their hips certified. Can also suffer from blood disorders, digestive problems, epilepsy, chronic eczema, keratitis (inflammation of the cornea) and flea allergies.

 

Exercise:

German Shepherd Dogs love vigorous activity. Try to incorporate some kind of task or training in with their exercise as this will keep your dog physically and mentally fit. These dogs are very intelligent and crave a good challenge.

 

Life Expectancy:

Around 13 years.
